Our year-round highlights
Trip on the Gornergrat Railway
The trip on the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt up to the Gornergrat and back again offers breathtaking views and a spectacular view of the Matterhorn.
When open: all year round
Ticket: A return ticket Zermatt–Gornergrat
Top tip: For the ride up, it is best to secure a seat on the right-hand side of the train. Between the Riffelalp and Riffelberg stations, the “iconic photo bend” awaits you, where you can capture the best shot of the train and the Matterhorn.
Golden Spot
The Golden Spot on the Gornergrat offers a unique photo opportunity with the gold-plated historical locomotive 3003 and the Matterhorn in the background.

Top tip: During the day, the carriage glistens in the sunlight. At sunset, you can experience a beautiful play of colours where the gold comes into its own in a warm shade.
ZOOOM the Matterhorn
ZOOOM the Matterhorn brings you up-close to the Matterhorn in three adventures: take the perfect close-up shot with periscopes, capture the most beautiful seasonal moods in the immersive 3D cinema, and experience the mountains from a bird’s-eye perspective on a virtual paragliding flight.

Ticket: Included in the return ticket Zermatt–Gornergrat
Top tip: A great alternative, especially in bad weather. Also perfect if you want to find out more about the mountains around Zermatt.
Grand Tour Foto-Spot
Of course, we also have one of the famous Grand Tour photo spots in Switzerland.

Top tip: If you take the first train in the morning, you have a greater chance of being seen alone in the photo.
Viewing platform
The viewing platform on the Gornergrat offers the ultimate 360° panorama of the Matterhorn, 29 four-thousand-metre peaks and the Gorner Glacier. Perfect for epic shots – and right at the 3100 Kulmhotel.

Tips: In the evenings, you can capture impressive moments of the sunset, which bathes the horizon in fascinating colours. The 360° Loop on the Gornergrat starts and ends at the viewing platform behind the 3100 Kulmhotel – 15 minutes with an epic panorama: Here you can capture the Matterhorn, the Dufourspitze, the Gorner Glacier and perhaps even ibexes with your lens
Gorner Glacier
The Gorner Glacier – the third largest in the Alps – is impressive with its ice mass and the backdrop of the Matterhorn and some famous four-thousand-metre peaks including the Dufourspitze. The viewing platform on the Gornergrat offers the best view of the glacier.

Top tip: From June to October, you can combine this spot with a hike with a glacier view from the Gornergrat to Riffelberg.
Summer
Meet the Sheep
Experience around 125 Valais Blacknose sheep up close on the Gornergrat in July and August. Our shepherd will tell you exciting stories about the lives of the animals – against a unique backdrop of the Matterhorn.

When open: Every summer from July to August. Visiting hours are daily from 10 am to 4 pm at the latest (except Tuesdays).
Ticket: free of charge
Top tip: If possible, come in the morning, ideally between 10 am and 12.30 pm. That is when the temperatures are pleasant and the sheep particularly playful and trusting.
Hiking
On the Gornergrat, you will find hikes for every level – from short walks with photo spots to epic mountain tours with perfect backdrops: the Matterhorn, mountain lakes, Alpine meadows and rustic forests.

Top tip: The Hiking ticket from Zermatt. Numerous hikes lead from the Gornergrat to the Riffelberg. The hiking ticket includes two sections for the outward and return journey (Zermatt – Gornergrat and Riffelberg – Zermatt). The Gornergrat – Riffelberg section is completed on foot.
Sunrise trips
A magical start to the day: experience the sunrise at Lake Riffelsee with a reflection of the Matterhorn and further panoramic views on the Gornergrat – perfect golden hour photos guaranteed.

Ticket: Tickets must be reserved in advance. Breakfast can be booked as an option.
Top tip: Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear for the short hike to Lake Riffelsee and dress warmly – it is often still very cold in the morning. Don’t forget your headband or hat. A thermos flask of warm tea or coffee provides extra warmth.
Lake Riffelsee
Lake Riffelsee is a must-see in Zermatt: when the wind is still, the Matterhorn is reflected crystal-clear in the surface of the water – a photo motif that already features on many smartphone backgrounds.

When open: during the summer months

Top tip: The most beautiful photos are taken at dawn/dusk: early in the morning or towards evening, the wind is gentler and the reflection becomes clearer. Just a 10-minute walk from Rotenboden station, a small, often undiscovered “secret lake” awaits behind the lake – perfect for a picnic or a quiet break with an idyllic backdrop.
Alpine Garden
At 2,800 m, the Gornergrat is home to Europe’s highest Alpine Garden – a short summer dream full of rare Alpine flowers. From July to mid-August, over 100 plant species bloom here against the backdrop of the Matterhorn, Riffelhorn and Lake Riffelsee.

Top tip: Combine your visit with a photo stop at Lake Riffelsee.

Winter
Sledging
Speed from Rotenboden to Riffelberg on the highest sledging run in the Alps – always with a view of the Matterhorn. Action, snow and Alpine panorama with 29 four-thousand-metre peaks included!
When open: depending on snow conditions
Ticket: Winter pass
Safety instructions: Wear the right equipment: warm winter clothing and gloves, high, sturdy boots with a good profile for steering and braking (no sneakers/high heels/ski boots), a snow sports helmet. Familiarise yourself with the braking and steering technology. Children sit in front of and close to an adult. You are not allowed to take dogs on the sledging run.
Snowshoe trekking
Perfect for a sporty outing: make tracks in the pristine deep snow, admire the Matterhorn in the background and capture the silence of the mountains – all on safe, signposted routes.
When open: depending on snow conditions
Ticket: There are several options: book the sections you want to travel by train as single tickets. Note that a return ticket Zermatt–Gornergrat is sometimes cheaper than buying several individual routes. Or you can book the winter pass and get around flexibly on the mountain all day long. Suitable snowshoes can be hired directly at the stations of the Gornergrat Railway, Gornergrat, Rotenboden and Riffelberg.
Top tip: Wait for the perfect moment and have your photo taken together with the Gornergrat Railway and the Matterhorn.
Winter walking
The magical winter wonderland with views of the Matterhorn makes a winter hike on the Gornergrat a unique experience.

Top tip: As a winter hiker, you can buy individual sections of the route you would like to cover by train. Depending on the route, a return ticket Zermatt–Gornergrat may be cheaper than individual routes. It’s worth comparing!
Dining with the Stars
Dining with the stars on the Gornergrat: enjoy Fondue Chinoise under the clearest starry sky in the Alps at the 3100 Kulmhotel with a view of the Matterhorn. Star guide Peter Salzmann shows you the constellations and their myths before you visit the observatory exclusively and look deep into the universe through the telescope .
