The Eagle Cup: a golf tournament on the Matterhorn

Story 75

Every year in September, the 9-hole Matterhorn Eagle Cup adventure golf competition takes place at the foot of the Matterhorn. Marcel Mooser, a passionate golfer and former member of the Management Board of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, has taken part in the tournament on several occasions. He talks about his experiences.

Marcel Mooser, what makes the Matterhorn Eagle Cup so special for you?

Marcel Mooser: “What I like best is playing golf in a fantastic setting: the balls can be played with a view of the Matterhorn between 2,500 and 1,400 metres above sea level. The competition actually takes something of a back seat.”

What is the difference between the Matterhorn Eagle Cup, in which adventure golf is played, and a regular golf tournament?

Marcel Mooser: “The big difference at the Matterhorn Eagle Cup is that you play in open terrain and not on a prepared golf course. The hole has a diameter of 75 cm so you at least have a chance of putting the ball. You can also move the ball one club length.”

What appeals to you about it?

Marcel Mooser: “The balls fly much further than they would normally at this extraordinary altitude, something that makes every golfer happy. The air pressure is lower, you can tell.”

You’ve taken part in the Eagle Cup several times, what was your highlight?

Marcel Mooser: “At the Matterhorn Eagle Cup, the main focus is on fun and conviviality. In a team of four with close friends, we even won the tournament once!”
