Gornergrat Railway – 125 years of fascination

On 20 August 1898, the Gornergrat Railway, Switzerland’s first electric rack railway, travelled up the Gornergrat (3,089m.a.s.l.) for the first time. From this date on, this pioneering feat of railway engineering enabled guests from near and far to discover the mystical mountain and glacier world above Zermatt and had a lasting impact on the development of tourism in the small town. In 2023, the Gornergrat Railwaywill be celebrating its 125th anniversary with numerous anniversary activities and offers.
