Twenty-nine 4,000-metre peaks all at once

Story 29

Flowering tulip fields, windmills and green as far as the eye can see. Luzia and Merle have known nothing else their whole lives. The two Dutch women are all the more looking forward to their summer holidays. Last year, they met René and Verena when they were on an exchange semester with them in Rotterdam. Now they are spending a week at their chalet in Zermatt.

On a sunny morning at the end of August, the four friends set out for the Gornergrat with their backpacks and hiking boots. Luzia and Merle can't tear themselves away from the windows of the Gornergrat Railway. They can’t get enough of the breathtaking views of the mountains.

From the Dufourspitze to the Allalinhorn

“Just wait until we get to the top,” says Verena promisingly. At the station, they get off and walk up to the viewing platform. The view is breathtaking. Luzia and Merle count the mountain peaks with the mounted telescope.

“In Switzerland, there are a total of 48 mountains that are higher than 4,000 metres above sea level. From here you can see 29 four-thousand-metre peaks,” says René.

“That’s unbelievable,” Merle replies. “The highest mountain in Holland is just 322 metres high.”

René and Verena grin at each other and are delighted at the enthusiasm of their two guests. “At 4,634 metres, the Dufourspitze is the highest mountain you can see from here,” says Verena, pointing towards the mountain.

Luzia and Merle follow her and quickly find the mountain because the telescope reveals the names of the peaks.

Movement with an all-round view

From the viewing platform, you can take a short circular walk. Here you can marvel at the Monte Rosa massif and see the Gorner Glacier.

“Ibexes!” says Luzia excitedly. They quickly take some pictures for their photo album. The excursion seems to have been a success.
