Gornergrat - the natural paradise high above Zermatt
Surrounded by twenty-nine 4,000-metre high peaks, including the Matterhorn, the view from the Gornergrat could hardly be more impressive. See Switzerland’s highest summits and the third longest glacier in the Alps.
The world-famous mirror image of the Matterhorn in the Riffelsee lake can be marvelled at on windless days. The mountain lake lies at 2,770 metres in the middle of a nature reservation, and it’s just a 10-minute walk from Rotenboden station.
Highlights in the midst of nature on the Gornergrat
The Gornergrat train climbs through various natural vegetational zones, as it rises from 1,600 metres to 3,100 metres above sea level. Starting through the Arven forest on the Riffelalp and then over alpine meadows on the Riffelberg. The higher the train climbs the more the vegetation disappears and finally you enter a barren world of rocks and stones when you arrive at 3,100 metres above sea level. Ahead of you are summits of over 4,000 metres and Switzerland’s third largest glacier.
Well-structured hiking trails connect walkers to the mountain in summer. In winter there is the fun sled run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg – just one of the many great things to do.
