Description

The roughly one-hour hike leads along the railway line from Gornergrat down to Riffelberg. Always in view are the Matterhorn and the 28 other four-thousanders that can be admired from this hike. The hike goes down on the right side of the railway tracks (looking towards the valley). Initially through open, rocky terrain. Just below Gornergrat, you will find "Chalet Bomber." Here is the winter workplace of an important person: the switch cleaner who ensures that snowed-in and iced switches are cleared in winter and that trains run on the correct track.

At the height of the Rotenboden station, rock and stone are gradually replaced by alpine meadows. Numerous black-nosed sheep graze here. Unnoticed, you pass the place where a large igloo village hosts guests in winter. After about an hour of walking, you reach Riffelberg.
