Trauben-Steinbrech

Saxifraga paniculata Mill.

This member of the saxifrage family leaves nothing to chance. It is a survivor that is well adapted to life in calcareous soil and very exposed areas.

The Livelong Saxifrage grows to a height of between 5 and 50 cm. It has small, grey-green leaves that are arranged in a rosette at the bottom. These rosette leaves have small pores at their edges that excrete lime. They therefore usually look a little like they are covered in white frost.

Facts and Figures

The Livelong Saxifrage grows in small clumps which helps it withstand frost. Its fleshy leaves are ideal for storing water, so it also copes well with dryness. The pores on the Livelong Saxifrage are also an adaptation that serves to release excess lime back into the environment. These characteristics allow it to thrive in extreme locations.

Territory

In Switzerland, the Livelong Saxifrage can be found in the Alps, at the edge of the Alps and in the Jura on calcareous, nutrient-deficient rock and grassland.   more information
