Is a day in the snow more than just skiing for you? The Igloo Village is a hangout for both skiers and those on foot.
Year after year the village is created anew in around 3,000 man hours, all by hand, and always with a special theme; this year’s theme is ‘mythical creatures’. The Igloo Village is not just for a night’s stay but offers food and drinks during the day at the Igloo bar, for example: a traditional local fondue – a real treat and probably consumed on the world’s sunniest terrace.
The Igloo Village lies by a winter hiking trail, on the right of the railway tracks (looking towards the valley) and is easily reached on foot from Rotenboden Station. It’s about a 15-minute walk. After enjoying yourself and topping up on sun you can return upwards to Rotenboden or continue downwards to Riffelberg Station.
The best deal: Igloo lunch with fondue including the rail trip
Welcome drink: Home-made Glühwein (mulled wine) or tea
Cheese fondue on the sunny terrace
Rail trip to the Gornergrat and back
In the ‘Igloo-Lunch-Deal’ you don’t only get the welcome Glühwein and fondue on the terrace but also the rail trip up to the Gornergrat. Before you realise that you’re hungry we suggest you take the train right to the top where you can get a magnificent view of the surrounding peaks and the glacial world from the viewing platform. Then you can go down one station by train to Rotenboden and from here you will be in the Igloo Village in 15 minutes.
