Gornergrat Bahn

Description

The Gornergrat Railway is a cogwheel train in Zermatt in the canton of Wallis. The valley station is in the centre of Zermatt, at 1,604 m. The Gornergrat trains take you up to 3,089 m to the Gornergrat itself. Gornergrat station is the highest open-air railway station in Europe. The cogwheel railway opened for traffic in 1898 and it was the first electrically-powered cogwheel railway in Switzerland.

The Gornergrat lies among twenty-nine, 4,000 m peaks and several glaciers and is a starting point for many mountain hikers. The Gorner glacier is the second longest in the Alps. From the Gornergrat you get the absolutely best view of the Matterhorn. In winter, the Gornergrat is the heart of Zermatt’s ski region.
